A Civic came in overheating with the owner already braced for the worst. Before anyone commits to that job it is worth spending twenty minutes proving it.

Step-by-Step Test
Check the dipstick, and know what it can and cannot tell you
Pull the dipstick and look at the oil. Creamy, milky oil that looks like coffee with too much milk means coolant has got into the oil, which is a strong sign. But clean oil does not clear the gasket, because a gasket can fail between a cylinder and a coolant passage without ever letting coolant into the oil. A clean dipstick means keep testing, not all is well.
Look under the oil filler cap, with a pinch of salt
The underside of the filler cap on this Civic had a slight milky film. That looks damning and often is not. Short journeys and cold weather cause condensation to collect in the top of the engine and emulsify with oil residue right where the cap sits, and plenty of perfectly healthy cars show it. Use this as a reason to keep looking, never as a verdict on its own.
Note the overheating pattern before you start
How the car overheats is useful information. Rapid overheating, coolant being pushed out of the expansion tank, bubbling in the header tank or a heater that has gone cold all point towards combustion gases in the system. Gradual overheating in traffic only is more likely a fan, a thermostat or a tired radiator, none of which need a head off.
Set up the sniff tester on a cold engine
Start with the engine cold, both for safety and for a clean result. Remove the radiator or expansion tank cap and fill the tester with the correct amount of test fluid, which is blue to begin with. The tester bulb sits over the opening. It does not need to seal perfectly, because all it has to do is draw air from above the coolant through the fluid.
Start the engine and draw the air through
With the tester in place, start the engine and squeeze the bulb to pull air from the top of the cooling system through the fluid. Take your time and give it a decent number of squeezes. What you are doing is passing any gas sitting above the coolant through a fluid that reacts to combustion gases.
Read the colour change
Blue means no combustion gases detected. A change to green or yellow means exhaust gas is present in the cooling system, and there is only one way for that to get there. On the Civic in the video the fluid changed, which is about as definitive as a driveway test gets: the head gasket has failed and the car needs the head off.
Do not stop at one result you did not expect
If the fluid does not change but the car still behaves like a gasket failure, run the test again for longer with the engine properly warmed and the thermostat open, because a small leak takes longer to show. If it still will not change colour, the good news is that your money is better spent looking at the radiator, the fan, the thermostat or the water pump.
Why the Sniff Test Beats the Other Checks
Every other quick check for a head gasket is circumstantial. Milky oil can come from condensation. White exhaust smoke can be steam on a cold morning. A missing heater can be an airlock. Coolant loss can be a hose, a radiator or a heater matrix. Each of these makes a head gasket possible without making it certain, and people spend a lot of money on possible.
The sniff test is different because it looks for something that has no innocent explanation. Combustion gas in the cooling system means there is a path from a cylinder into a coolant passage. There is no condensation-based reason for that and no cold-morning version of it. If the fluid changes colour, the gasket has gone.
That is why it is worth doing even when you are fairly sure. It converts a strong suspicion into evidence, and evidence is what you want before authorising a job of this size.
What Happens if the Test Is Positive
A failed gasket on a Civic means the cylinder head comes off. While it is off, the head needs checking for flatness, because overheating warps heads and refitting a warped head onto a new gasket simply repeats the failure. Many head gasket jobs that come back were skipped skims.
Budget for head bolts as well, since most modern engines use stretch bolts that are single use, and expect the machine shop to have an opinion about pressure testing the head if the car has been run hot for any length of time. It is also worth understanding why it overheated in the first place. If a failed fan or a stuck thermostat cooked the engine, fitting a gasket without fixing that guarantees a repeat.
Is It Worth Fixing?
This is the honest question and it depends entirely on the car. A head gasket job is a large bill relative to the value of an older Civic, and if the car also needs tyres, an MOT and has rust starting, the sums stop working. On the other hand a Civic with good history and a straight body is worth keeping, and these engines will run a long way once put right.
Two things push the answer towards fixing: knowing why it overheated and being confident the head is not cracked. Two things push it the other way: a long list of other work due, and evidence the car has been driven hard while overheating, which raises the chance of damage beyond the gasket.
Common Mistakes
- Condemning a gasket on a milky filler cap alone. Condensation does this on healthy cars every winter.
- Clearing a gasket because the oil looks clean. A gasket can fail into a coolant passage without ever touching the oil.
- Testing a hot engine. Start cold. Removing a cap from a hot pressurised system is how people get scalded.
- Giving the bulb two squeezes and calling it negative. Small leaks need time and a properly warm engine.
- Fitting a gasket without skimming the head. A warped head will fail the new gasket the same way.
- Reusing stretch head bolts. They are single use for a reason.
- Fixing the gasket and not the cause of the overheating. The fan or thermostat that cooked it is still there.
