Intervals count from the last time each job was done, not from today. If you have the service history, check it - if you do not, treat anything at or past its interval as due. Always confirm against your handbook: engine variants differ, and some model years switched designs mid-run.

Time or Mileage - Whichever Comes First
Every interval on a UK service schedule has two halves: a mileage figure and a time figure, and the rule is always whichever comes first. Low-mileage cars catch owners out constantly. Rubber ages whether the car moves or not, brake fluid absorbs moisture just sitting on the driveway, and oil degrades chemically long before a 9,000 mile figure is reached. A ten-year-old car with 40,000 miles on the clock is not a low-maintenance car - it is a car where every time-based interval has come around at least twice.
The opposite trap exists too. A motorway-mile car doing 25,000 miles a year hits its mileage caps in months, not years, and stretching an oil change because "it has only been eight months" ignores that the mileage half of the interval passed long ago. The Wet Belt Problem
If your car comes back with a wet belt verdict, read this bit twice. Belt-in-oil engines - the Ford 1.0 and 1.5 EcoBoost and the Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall and DS 1.2 PureTech are the big ones in the UK - run the timing belt inside the engine, bathed in oil. The design saves fuel, but as the belt ages it sheds rubber into the oil, which blocks the oil pick-up and starves the engine. By the time a wet belt announces itself, the bill is usually four figures.
The intervals have already been cut hard. PureTech belts have gone from as much as 10 years or 100,000 miles down to around 6 years or 60,000 miles, and Ford's book figure for the EcoBoost assumes perfect oil history that most cars simply do not have. The Fluids Everyone Forgets
Engine oil gets all the attention, but three other fluids quietly cause expensive failures. Brake fluid is hygroscopic - it pulls moisture out of the air - and after two years enough water has usually crept in to lower the boiling point and start corroding ABS components from the inside. It is a cheap change with no glamour, which is exactly why it gets skipped. Coolant is the same story on a longer clock: modern long-life coolant is typically good for around five years, but it does not last forever, and old coolant stops protecting against corrosion long before it stops looking pink.
Then there is gearbox oil. "Sealed for life" is a marketing phrase, not an engineering one - in practice it means sealed for the life of the warranty. A manual gearbox thanks you for fresh oil around 60,000 miles, automatics and DSGs mostly specify a change somewhere between 40,000 and 80,000 miles depending on type, and a CVT is the least forgiving of the lot. Do You Need Main Dealer Servicing?
No - and this has been the law for over twenty years. Under the UK's block exemption rules, a manufacturer cannot void your warranty because you used an independent garage, as long as the garage follows the manufacturer's schedule and uses parts and oil of the correct specification. What actually matters is the paper trail: itemised invoices showing the parts and oil specification used, at the right dates and mileages. A folder of invoices from a good independent is worth exactly as much to a warranty claim, and to the next buyer, as a stamped dealer book - and usually costs a third less to build.

How to Use Your Result
Work through the list top to bottom - it is ordered by how expensive neglect gets. Anything marked red is where we would start: on a car with no service history, assume it has never been done and price the job. Amber items go on the to-do list for the next few months. Then dig out whatever history you do have, because a single invoice showing a belt kit two years ago turns a red row green.
