About This Tool
A Mechanic's Brain, Not A Chatbot
Most AI tools answer car questions by guessing from everything on the internet - forum myths, American part names, and advice for engines your car has never had. This one is different by design. The AI Mechanic answers only from the Mr Auto Fixer knowledge base: over 90 step-by-step repair guides, 88 fault code pages, our UK repair cost guides, and the transcripts of more than 100 workshop videos - every one of them a real job done with Jamie's own hands in a UK workshop.
That changes what you get back. Ask about a P0016 on a Vauxhall and it pulls the actual fault code page and the cam-timing guides that relate to it. Describe a knocking noise on a Fiat 500 and it reasons from the suspension jobs we have actually filmed and written up. Every answer cites its sources, so one more click takes you to the full guide with photos, or the video of the repair being done. When the answer comes from a video, you are hearing what Jamie said over the actual car with the actual fault.

How It Works
Describe It
Reg plate or make and model, plus the symptoms in your own words. Fault codes help if you have them, but they are not required.
It Reads The Guides
The AI searches the whole knowledge base and pulls the pages and video transcripts that match your car and symptoms.
Mechanic's Answer
Likely causes in the order a mechanic would check them - cheapest and most likely first - with a traffic-light severity verdict.

Every claim is cited. Follow the links to the full guide or video and do the job yourself, or go to the garage knowing exactly what to ask.
What It Will And Will Not Do
It Will
- Rank the likely causes of your symptoms
- Give you the checking order a mechanic uses
- Tell you honestly how serious it is (green / amber / red)
- Link the exact guide or video for the fix
- Quote torque figures and prices when our guides state them
- Tell you when a job is beyond DIY
It Will Not
- Invent torque settings, prices or service intervals
- Pretend to know a car or fault we have not covered
- Replace putting the car on a ramp or a scanner on the port
- Sign off safety-critical work - brakes, steering, suspension always get the "have it checked" warning
- Ask for your email, account or card
That honesty is the whole point. An AI that confidently invents a cambelt torque figure is worse than no AI at all. When our guides do not cover something, this tool says so - and that gap goes straight onto Jamie's list of guides to write next, so the knowledge base gets better every week.
Getting The Best Answer
Treat it like describing the fault to a mechanic over the phone. The reg plate lookup fills in your car's exact spec from the DVSA database, which matters because a 1.0 EcoBoost and a 1.5 diesel Focus fail in completely different ways. Then describe what the car actually does: when it happens (cold start, under load, at speed), what it sounds or feels like, what warning lights are on, and any codes your scanner found. "Makes a noise" gets a generic answer; "metallic rattle from the front for the first 30 seconds on a cold morning, quieter when warm" gets a diagnosis.
If you have not scanned the car, that is fine - describe the symptoms and the AI will tell you what a scan would add. Our fault code hub explains any code it mentions, and if you would rather work through symptoms interactively, the symptom finder covers the most common ones without using your daily AI questions.
Free To Use, Fair To Run
Every answer costs real money to generate, so there is a small number of free questions per day for each visitor - enough to diagnose a real problem properly, not enough for someone's script to drain the tank for everyone else. The counter resets at midnight. No account, no email, no card: the quota is per connection, the spam check keeps the bots out, and everything else on the site - every guide, every fault code page, every tool - stays unlimited and free exactly as it always has been.
