The DS3 uses a conventional single-piston sliding caliper on the front, which makes this one of the more approachable jobs on the car. What catches people out is not the caliper or the disc, it is the caliper carrier: rust builds up underneath the stainless shims the pads slide on, swells them inwards and quietly jams the pad. Fit new parts onto a carrier nobody cleaned and you will be back under the same wheel within a year wondering why one pad is half the thickness of the other.
This guide covers the full disc and pad change on the front axle, in the order I actually do it, including the fasteners you will meet and the two or three that will be seized. It applies to the DS3 across its run, and the same approach carries over to the Citroen C3 and 208 running similar front brakes.
Before you start
Brakes are the one system where a mistake has no second chance. If you are not confident supporting the car safely, or the caliper piston will not retract, or you find a weeping hose or a split boot, stop and let a garage finish it. There is no shame in that and it is a great deal cheaper than the alternative. Always do both sides of an axle together, never one.

Step-by-Step Guide
Slacken the wheel bolts, then jack and support the car
Crack the wheel bolts loose while the car is still on the ground, because a wheel will simply spin once it is in the air. Then jack the DS3 at its proper front jacking point and put an axle stand under the sill seam before any part of you goes near the arch. A trolley jack on its own is a lifting tool, not a holding tool. Chock a rear wheel while you are at it.
Take the brake fluid reservoir cap off before you touch the piston
This is the step people skip and then wonder why fluid comes out of the top. Pushing a caliper piston back sends fluid the wrong way up the system, and with the cap sealed the reservoir pressurises. Loosen the cap first and rest it on top. Keep an eye on the level as you push each piston back, and mop up anything that overflows straight away, because brake fluid strips paint.
Crack off the two 12mm caliper bolts and push the piston back
The caliper itself is held by two 12mm bolts onto the sliding pins. Crack both loose but leave them in for the moment. Put a flat-blade screwdriver between the old pad and the piston and lever gently, using the old pad to spread the load so nothing marks the piston face. It should retract smoothly. If it fights you or the boot is split or weeping, stop and price a caliper, because a sticking piston will chew through the new pads it is fitted against.
Remove the caliper and hang it properly
With the piston back and the bolts out, the caliper lifts away. Never let it dangle on the flexible hose. The hose is rubber and it is the only thing between your pedal and a fluid leak, so support the caliper on a cable tie or a bungee hooked over the spring. It takes five seconds and it is the difference between a brake job and a brake job plus a new hose.
Undo the caliper carrier, T55 Torx, expect one to be tight
The carrier is held by two T55 Torx bolts. On a DS3 that has seen a few English winters, at least one will be genuinely seized. Crack it with a breaker bar by hand first rather than going straight in with a rattle gun, because you want to feel whether it is moving or whether the head is about to round off. Once it breaks free the gun can wind it out. Catch the carrier as the second bolt comes out, it is heavier than it looks.
Remove the two T30 screws and get the old disc off
Two small T30 Torx screws locate the disc on the hub. They are usually rusted, sometimes badly, and an impact driver saves a lot of swearing. With them out the disc should pull off. If it is stuck on the hub spigot, a few taps around the face with a copper mallet will shift it. Now look at the inner face of the old disc, which is the side you could not see with the wheel on. That face is nearly always worse than the outer one and it is why a disc that looked fine has been ruining your pads.
Strip and clean the caliper carrier - the step that actually matters
This is the difference between a brake job that lasts and one that comes back. Lift the stainless shims out of the carrier rather than just brushing over the top of them, because rust builds up underneath and swells them inwards. That swelling is what clamps the pad and stops it sliding, and a pad that cannot slide drags, overheats and wears at an angle. Wire-brush under each shim, clean the seats flat, then clip them back in and check each one still has a bit of spring movement. You do not need new shims if the old ones clean up sound.
Clean and grease the sliding pins
Pull each sliding pin out and look at it. They are usually dry, and the DS3 typically has a rubber boot on the upper pin that likes to perish. Clean the pin and its bore, then grease it with a proper rubber-safe brake slider grease, not copper grease. You want enough to make it slide in and out with light hand pressure and no more, because too much has nowhere to go and pushes the boot off. If a pin is scored or its boot is torn, replace it now while everything is apart.
Wire-brush the hub face before the new disc goes near it
Any rust scale left on the hub face holds the new disc at a slight angle, and that shows up later as a pulsing pedal you will blame on cheap discs. Take a wire brush to the mating surface until it is bright and flat, then wipe the new disc down with brake cleaner to remove the protective oil film it is shipped with. Fit it, and run the two T30 screws in. Those screws only locate the disc, they are not what clamps it, so snug is correct and gorilla-tight just rounds them out for the next person.
Refit the carrier, then fit the pads bottom first
Put a small amount of thread lock on the two T55 carrier bolts and wind them in. These are a genuine torque item rather than a feel item, so look the figure up for your exact DS3 and use a torque wrench if you have one. Then a dab of copper grease on the backing plates only, wiping every trace off the friction material and the disc face. The pads go in bottom edge first, push down, then the top drops into place. They should sit snug in the cleaned shims without being hammered in.
Line up the sliding pin flats and bolt the caliper back on
Before the caliper goes back, rotate each sliding pin so its flat face is aligned correctly, because that flat is what stops the pin spinning as you tighten the bolt. Get both lined up, seat the caliper, start both 12mm bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten them properly. Do the other side exactly the same way before you put a single wheel back on.
Pump the pedal before you move the car
The pistons are wound right back, so the first pedal press will go straight to the floor. Pump it until it comes up firm and stays firm, which brings the pads out to meet the discs. Then check the fluid level, refit the reservoir cap and re-torque the wheel bolts once the car is down. For the first two hundred miles avoid hard stops from speed and let the new pads bed in gradually, and expect a little dust and smell early on.
The Carrier Clean-Up Is the Whole Job
If you take one thing from this guide, take this. Almost every "my new brakes are already worn out" complaint I see on a DS3 traces back to a carrier that was never stripped. The stainless shims sitting in the carrier are what the pad ears slide on. Moisture gets underneath them, the rust that forms takes up more space than the metal it came from, and the shim gets pushed inwards. The gap the pad needs closes up.
The pad then cannot retract when you come off the brake. It stays in light contact with the disc, generates heat it was never meant to hold, and wears on a taper. The owner sees one pad worn to nothing at one end and assumes a sticking caliper piston. Sometimes it is. More often it is a five pound shim and ten minutes with a wire brush that nobody spent.
So lift the shims out. Clean underneath them. Check they spring back. That is the step that decides whether this job lasts three years or nine months.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving the reservoir cap on while pushing the piston back, then wondering where the fluid on the paint came from.
- Hanging the caliper on its hose. The hose is not a hook. Cable tie it to the spring.
- Going straight in with a rattle gun on a seized T55. Crack it by hand first so you can feel whether it is turning or rounding.
- Copper grease on the sliding pins. It degrades the rubber boots. Slider grease on pins, copper grease on backing plates.
- Any grease on the friction face or the disc. Wipe every trace off, then wipe again.
- Skipping the hub face clean. Rust scale under a new disc gives you a pulsing pedal you will blame on the parts.
- Overtightening the T30 disc screws. They locate the disc, nothing more. The wheel bolts do the clamping.
- Driving off without pumping the pedal. The first press goes to the floor. Find that out on the drive, not at the end of the road.
Worth Checking While the Wheel Is Off
You have the wheel off and a clear view of things you normally never see, so use it. On the DS3 in the video the CV boot clip had failed and was throwing grease, which is a five minute fix caught early and a driveshaft later on. Look at the flexible brake hose for cracking or bulging, check the disc shield is not rubbing, glance at the inner edge of the tyre for the uneven wear that points at alignment or a tired suspension bush, and give the lower arm ball joint a shake. Finding these now costs you nothing but a minute of looking.
Garage vs DIY
A front discs and pads job on a DS3 typically runs somewhere around £180 to £280 fitted at an independent, depending on parts quality and local labour rates, and noticeably more at a main dealer. Doing it yourself is broadly a parts-only cost, so the saving is real, but be honest about the tools: without a breaker bar and something to shift a rusted T30 screw, a seized fastener can turn a pleasant afternoon into a recovery truck. If you are buying the tools for the first time the first job saves less than you would hope, and every job after it saves plenty.
