MG Repair Guides

Free repair guides for MG vehicles - written by a qualified UK mechanic. The MG ZS has become one of the UK's best-selling affordable SUVs, with running costs that are competitive with the best in its class. Replacing the cabin pollen filter yourself takes under fifteen minutes and requires no tools - it's a good starting point if you're looking to reduce your maintenance bills and learn a bit about how your car works.

About MG Maintenance

The guide covers pollen and cabin filter replacement on the MG ZS, including the filter location behind the glovebox, correct filter orientation when fitting, and how to reset the service reminder indicator if your car displays one. MG's modern range shares some engineering with SAIC's broader platform, and parts availability in the UK has improved considerably as the brand has grown. More MG guides covering brake jobs and service intervals are in development.

The modern MG range - the ZS, HS, MG3 and the electric models built since 2016 - comes with one of the longest warranties on the UK market at seven years or 80,000 miles. That warranty is only honoured if the service schedule is followed to the letter, so keep receipts and make sure each service is recorded, whether it is done by a dealer or an independent garage using approved parts. Because many MGs cover low annual mileages, corroded and lipped brake discs are the most common MOT advisory - a longer monthly drive with a few firm stops keeps the discs clean.

The petrol ZS and MG3 use conventional, easy-to-service engines, and parts prices are among the cheapest of any current brand. On the ZS EV, the main owner jobs are keeping the 12-volt auxiliary battery healthy - it still runs the locking and control systems and will immobilise the car if it fails - and having the battery coolant checked at the specified intervals. Software updates fix a surprising number of warning-light gremlins on these cars, so ask the dealer to check for updates before paying for diagnosis. The pollen filter change above is typical of how DIY-friendly the ZS is.

Two service items matter more on MGs than owners expect. Brake fluid should be changed every two years without fail - it is in the schedule, it is cheap, and it is one of the first things checked in a warranty dispute. And on the EV and hybrid models, the friction brakes need deliberate exercise: regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so the discs corrode faster than on a petrol car and seized sliders are a growing MOT theme on electric MGs. A few firm stops from speed once a week keeps them clean. Finally, the budget tyres often fitted to keep list prices low wear quickly and noisily - replacing them with a mid-range brand transforms the car and usually costs little more. None of this is expensive; it is just easy to skip on a car that otherwise asks for nothing.
