Faded plastic trim makes an otherwise tidy vehicle look neglected. Bumper corners, arch trims, mirror caps and van side mouldings all go the same chalky grey, and no amount of washing brings them back, because the problem is not dirt.
This one came off social media rather than out of a workshop manual. The claim was that you can restore faded trim with nothing but heat, no product at all. The test piece was the faded bumper on an old Transit, and it worked, immediately and dramatically. It is genuinely one of the more satisfying things you can do to a tired vehicle in half an hour.
It also carries real risk, which most of the videos showing it do not mention. Heat that restores trim is heat that melts trim, scorches paint and cracks glass, and the margin between the two is smaller than you would like. The technique below uses a heat gun rather than the blowtorch used in the video, for reasons explained further down.
Use a heat gun, not a blowtorch
A blowtorch works, and it is what was used on camera, but it puts an open flame at well over 1,000 degrees onto a surface that starts deforming around 100. A heat gun does the same job with a controllable temperature and no flame. If a blowtorch is genuinely all you have, keep it moving constantly, keep it further back than feels necessary, and never use one near fuel filler areas, wiring, tyres or glass.

Step-by-Step
Wash and degrease the trim first
This step gets skipped in every video and it matters. Heating dirty trim bakes road film, old tyre dressing and silicone into the surface, and the finish comes out patchy and streaked. Wash the panel properly, then wipe it down with panel wipe or isopropyl alcohol so nothing is left on the surface. Let it dry completely, because trapped water flashing to steam under heat will lift and blister the plastic.
Mask anything you are not trying to heat
Tape off adjacent paint, and keep well away from glass, rubber seals, lamp lenses and any wiring. Painted panels scorch and discolour long before the trim does, and toughened glass can crack from a sharp local temperature difference. If the trim is a bolt-on piece and it is easy to remove, taking it off the vehicle is by far the safest way to do this.
Set the heat gun low and test somewhere hidden
Start at the lowest setting that does anything. Find an out-of-sight section, an arch liner edge or the underside of a bumper corner, and work there first until you know how this particular plastic responds. Different mouldings react very differently, and the piece you practise on should never be the one people look at.
Keep the gun moving, and stand it further off than feels necessary
Hold the gun roughly 100 to 150mm away and sweep it steadily across the surface. Never hold it still. You are looking for the colour to deepen and even out as you pass over it, which happens within a second or two on faded trim. The change is obvious and immediate, which is exactly why it is easy to overdo.
Stop the moment it goes black
The restoration finishes far sooner than instinct suggests. Once the colour has come back, that section is done, and any further heat is only taking you towards a shiny, wavy, permanently damaged surface. If you see the surface start to gloss up, go glassy, or show any texture change, you have already gone too far and that cannot be undone.
Work in sections and keep your passes even
Do a manageable area at a time and blend each pass into the last. Patchiness here comes from uneven dwell rather than uneven fading, so a steady sweeping rhythm matters more than the temperature setting. Step back regularly and look at the panel from a few feet away in good light, because up close everything looks fine.
Let it cool completely before touching it
The plastic stays soft while it is hot and will take a fingerprint or a cloth mark that becomes permanent. Leave it alone until it is properly cool to the back of your hand. Do not be tempted to wipe it down while warm.
Seal it once cool, if you want it to last
Heat alone gives you the look back but leaves the surface bare and exposed to exactly the UV that faded it in the first place. Once fully cool, a coat of a proper trim sealant or a ceramic-based trim coating slows the fade considerably. This step is what turns a few months of results into a year or more.
Why Trim Fades, and Why Heat Brings It Back
Exterior trim is usually a polypropylene blend containing plasticisers and carbon black. UV light and heat break down the surface layer over years, and the plasticisers and oils that keep the plastic supple slowly migrate out and wash away. What you are left with is a microscopically rough, oxidised outer skin that scatters light in all directions instead of absorbing it. That scattering is the grey chalky look, and the black plastic underneath is completely unaffected.
Heating the surface briefly softens that outer layer and draws remaining oils up through it, re-flowing the roughness into a smooth surface again. Smooth plastic absorbs light rather than scattering it, so the colour comes back. Nothing has been added and nothing has been coloured in, which is why it works with no product at all.
It also explains the limitation. You are using up oils that were already running out, so the effect is temporary, and it can only be repeated so many times before there is nothing left to draw up. Each restoration is a little less convincing than the last.
How Long It Lasts, and the Alternatives
Bare, unsealed, expect a few months before the fade starts returning, less on a vehicle parked outside in full sun. Sealing afterwards with a dedicated trim coating extends that substantially, and the combination of heat then seal gives easily the best result of any approach here.
The alternatives are worth knowing. Trim restorer gels and dressings are the easy option: no risk at all, instant results, but they sit on the surface and wash off over weeks. Dye-based trim restorers genuinely pigment the plastic and last a year or more, but they take proper preparation and can look plasticky if applied heavily. Replacement trim is the permanent answer and priced accordingly.
For a tired van or an older car where the trim is sound but grey, the heat method costs nothing but time and gets you most of the way to new. For a car you care about a great deal, a dye or a proper coating is the more controlled route.
When Not to Do This At All
Do not use this on painted plastic, on anything textured that you cannot afford to gloss up, or on trim that is already cracked, since heat opens cracks further. Keep it away from anything you cannot replace easily.
Do not do it near the fuel filler, on or around wiring or connectors, near tyres, or anywhere fuel vapour could collect, particularly with a naked flame. Do not do it on glass or within a few inches of it. And do not do it on a vehicle that is not yours without asking, because the failure mode here is visible, permanent and expensive.
If the trim in question is a large, awkward, unremovable moulding right against fresh paint, the honest advice is to use a dye or a dressing instead. The result is slightly less dramatic and the downside is nil.
Common Mistakes
- Heating dirty trim. Road film and old dressing bake in and the finish comes out streaked.
- Using a blowtorch because a video did. An open flame gives you no temperature control on a surface that deforms around 100 degrees.
- Holding the heat still. Keep it sweeping. A stationary gun makes a permanent wavy patch in seconds.
- Chasing a deeper black once it has gone black. The job is finished at that point, and everything after it is damage.
- Working next to unmasked paint or glass. Both are hurt long before the trim is.
- Touching or wiping it while warm. Soft plastic takes fingerprints and cloth marks permanently.
- Practising on the most visible panel. Test on an arch liner edge or a bumper underside first.
- Skipping the sealant. Bare restored trim is exposed to the same UV that faded it, and fades again within months.
