A knock, clonk or rattle from the front of the car over bumps and potholes is one of the most common complaints there is, and it sends a lot of people looking in the wrong place. The car in the video is a BMW 730Ld, and the owner had convinced himself the exhaust was hanging down, because that is what it sounded like from the driver's seat.
It was not the exhaust. It was an anti-roll bar drop link, which is a short bar with a small ball joint at each end connecting the anti-roll bar to the suspension strut. Inside those joints are nylon bushes, and when they wear the joint develops play. Every time the suspension moves, that play takes up with a knock.
The good news is that this is one of the cheapest faults on a car, it is easy to confirm without any tools at all, and on most vehicles it is a genuinely straightforward DIY replacement. This guide covers the check and the change, and although the car filmed is a BMW, drop links work the same way on almost everything.
Why it sounds worse than it is
A worn drop link knocks loudly out of all proportion to the size of the fault, because the anti-roll bar is transmitting the weight of the car through a joint with a couple of millimetres of play in it. That is why people assume something major has come loose. It is also why the noise is usually worse on a heavy car and over sharp bumps rather than gentle ones.

Step-by-Step
Confirm it is the drop link before buying anything
This check needs no tools. With the car safely raised and the wheel off, or even just reaching in with the wheels on the ground, take hold of the drop link and try to shake it. A healthy one is solid, with no movement at all. A worn one moves in your hand and you can usually hear the knock as it does. Compare left against right, because the good side tells you what solid feels like on your car.
Take a second to rule out the obvious impostors
While you are under there, put a hand on the exhaust and rock it, since a broken hanger sounds very similar from inside the car. Check the anti-roll bar bushes where the bar clamps to the subframe, and give the track rod ends and the lower arm ball joints a shake. Drop links are the most likely answer by a distance, but ten seconds of checking saves fitting a part that was never the problem.
Raise, support and remove the wheel
Slacken the wheel bolts on the ground first, then jack the car and get it onto axle stands before removing the wheel. Never work with a limb under a car held up by a jack alone. Chock a wheel at the opposite end while you are at it.
Soak both nuts and find the counter-hold
A drop link has a nut at each end, and the stud will happily spin with the nut unless you hold it. Look at the end of the stud: some have a Torx socket, some take an Allen key, some have a spanner flat behind the nut, and some have nothing useful at all. On the BMW in the video it was an 18mm nut with a T40 socket in the end of the stud. Give both nuts a good soak in penetrating oil and leave it a few minutes.
Undo both nuts, holding the stud steady
Put the counter-hold in the end of the stud and undo the nut with a ratchet spanner. Take your time, because the failure mode here is rounding the socket in the stud, at which point the job becomes cutting the link off. If a stud does spin hopelessly and the counter-hold is chewed, cutting it is a legitimate and quick answer, since the part is being replaced anyway.
Pull the old link out and inspect it
With both nuts off, the link comes out of its two holes. Have a proper look at it on the bench and work the joints in your hands. You will usually feel exactly the play you heard as a knock, and on a badly gone one the nylon bushes inside the joint have worn away almost completely. It is worth doing this because it confirms you fixed the right thing.
Check the new part against the old one
Hold the new link against the old one before you fit it. Length, thread size and the orientation of the joints all need to match, and left and right are sometimes different parts on the same car. It takes ten seconds and it is far better than discovering the difference with the car in the air and the shops shut.
Fit the new link and torque it properly
Feed the new link into place and start both nuts by hand to be certain the threads are clean. Then tighten with the counter-hold in the new stud, to the manufacturer's torque figure if you have it. Drop link nuts are usually modest torque rather than brutally tight, and overdoing it can damage the joint you have just fitted. Refit the wheel, lower the car, and re-torque the wheel bolts.
Do the other side, and road test
Suspension parts wear in pairs because both sides have done the same miles over the same roads. If one link has gone, the other is rarely far behind, and doing both saves repeating the whole job in a few months. Then drive the same road that produced the knock. Done properly, the silence is immediate and obvious.
What a Drop Link Actually Does
The anti-roll bar runs across the car and resists body roll in corners by tying the two sides of the suspension together. It cannot bolt straight to the suspension, because both ends move up and down independently, so a short link with a ball joint at each end connects the bar to each strut.
That means the drop link joints articulate constantly, on every bump, every corner and every bit of uneven road. They are small joints doing a lot of work in the worst environment on the car, sitting behind the wheel where they get soaked in water and road salt all winter. It is not surprising they are one of the most commonly replaced parts on any vehicle.
When a joint wears, the link no longer holds position properly. Body roll gets very slightly worse, which most drivers never notice, and the play announces itself as a knock, which everybody notices.
Is It Safe to Drive With a Knocking Drop Link?
A worn drop link is an advisory rather than an emergency, and you are not in immediate danger driving to the garage. It does not affect braking or steering, and a car with a knocking link still handles broadly normally in ordinary driving.
That said, it should not be left indefinitely. A joint with play in it is a joint on its way to separating, and a link that comes apart completely means that side of the anti-roll bar is doing nothing, which does change how the car behaves in a corner or a swerve. It is also an MOT item: excessive play in a suspension joint is a defect, and a link in poor enough condition will be recorded as a failure rather than an advisory.
Given the part is cheap and the job is short, there is very little argument for putting it off.
Why Both Sides, and What Else to Look At
Fitting one link and leaving the other is a common false economy. Both have covered the same miles over the same potholes, so if one has failed the other is usually close, and you will be jacking the car up again before long.
While the wheel is off, look at the anti-roll bar bushes themselves. These are the rubber blocks clamping the bar to the subframe, and perished bushes give a very similar knock. If the drop links check out solid but the noise is still there, the bar bushes are the next place to look, followed by the top strut mounts.
Common Mistakes
- Chasing the exhaust. A drop link knock sounds exactly like a loose exhaust from the driver's seat. Shake both before deciding.
- Undoing the nut without a counter-hold. The stud spins, the socket in its end rounds off, and now you are cutting it.
- Skipping the penetrating oil. Two minutes of soaking prevents most seized-fastener misery.
- Not comparing the new part to the old one. Left and right are sometimes different, and lengths vary within the same model range.
- Overtightening the new nut. These are a modest torque figure, and gorilla-tight damages the joint you just paid for.
- Doing one side only. The other has done identical miles and is usually next.
- Working under a car on a jack. Axle stands, every time, no exceptions.
