The service light reset on this 2019 Citroen C4 Spacetourer uses the same press-and-hold button method shared across most modern Citroen models. The procedure involves holding a button while turning the ignition on and waiting for a countdown to reach zero.

💡 Same Procedure Across Many Citroens This button-hold reset method is used on many Citroen models including the C1, C3, C4, C5 and Berlingo. The button location may vary slightly but the sequence is identical.

What Does the Service Light Mean?

The service reminder light is a countdown system built into the car's instrument cluster. It is set at the factory or after each service to alert you when the next scheduled maintenance is due, based on mileage, time elapsed, or a combination of both. On most modern vehicles it counts down based on the car's built-in oil life algorithm, which takes into account driving style, engine temperature cycles, and distance covered.

It is important to understand that the service light is a reminder — it does not mean the car has developed a fault. It is not the same as a warning light (such as an engine management, oil pressure, or coolant temperature light). If any of those illuminate, the car needs immediate attention. The service light simply tells you it is time to book a routine service.

⚠ Important: Only Reset After Completing a Service Resetting the service light without actually carrying out the required maintenance is dangerous. The service interval system is there to ensure your engine oil, filters, and safety-critical components are checked and replaced on schedule. Only reset the counter once you have completed — or had a garage complete — all the work due at that service interval.

What's Included in a Routine Service?

A standard interim or full service typically covers: engine oil and oil filter replacement, air filter inspection or replacement, pollen/cabin filter replacement, brake fluid check, coolant level and condition check, tyre condition and pressure check, lights and wipers check, and a visual inspection of brake pads and discs. A full service additionally covers items such as spark plugs (on petrol engines), fuel filter, and a more comprehensive inspection of suspension and steering components.

If you are carrying out your own service before resetting the light, make sure all fluid levels are topped up, the oil and filter have been changed, and any other items due at that service interval have been addressed. Consult your vehicle's service schedule in the handbook for the full list specific to your model and mileage.

01

Insert Key & Locate the Reset Button

Insert the key into the ignition slot. Look at the instrument cluster — at the top of the dash surround you will see a small button. This is the service reset button. Do not turn the ignition on yet.

02

Press and Hold the Button, Then Turn Ignition On

Press and hold the reset button. While still holding it, turn the ignition on to position two (do not start the engine). Keep holding the button. A countdown counter will appear on the instrument display.

Pro Tip: Keep holding the button throughout the entire countdown. If you let go early the reset will abort and you must start again from step 1.
03

Wait for the Countdown to Reach Zero

The display will count down. Keep holding the button the whole time until it reaches zero.

04

Re-initialisation Done — Release & Start

Once the counter hits zero the display will confirm “Re-initialisation done.” Release the button and start the vehicle. The service light should now be gone.

What If the Service Light Comes Back On Immediately?

If the service light reappears within a few miles of resetting it, the most likely cause is that the reset procedure was not completed fully. This often happens if the ignition was not held at position two for long enough, or the button was released before the countdown finished. Simply repeat the procedure from the beginning, making sure to hold the button all the way through the full countdown to zero and waiting for the confirmation message.

If the light returns after a short period of normal driving, it may be that the oil life monitor has assessed the current oil condition and determined service is needed sooner than expected — for example, if a lot of short cold-start journeys have been made or the oil was due for replacement at a lower mileage than anticipated. In this case, check the oil condition and level, and consider whether the service was completed fully before the reset.

A service light that cannot be cleared at all — despite following the correct procedure — may require a diagnostic tool (OBD scanner) to reset via the vehicle's ECU rather than through the dash button method. This is more common on newer vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset the service light?

On most cars built before around 2018, no — the service light can be reset using a manual button sequence through the dash, as described in this guide. On newer vehicles with fully digital dashboards or more complex service interval systems, an OBD2 scanner with service reset functionality may be required. If the manual reset procedure does not work on your vehicle, an inexpensive OBD scanner with service reset support is the next step.

Is it safe to drive with the service light on?

The service light itself is not a warning of immediate danger — it is a scheduled reminder. However, if the service is significantly overdue (more than a few thousand miles or several months past the recommended interval), you should address it as soon as possible. Driving on old engine oil increases wear and can lead to more serious and expensive engine damage over time. If you are unsure whether your car is safe to drive, check the oil level and condition first, and book a service promptly.

What is the difference between a service light and a check engine light?

A service light (often shown as a spanner, wrench, or "Service Due" message) is a scheduled maintenance reminder and does not indicate a fault. A check engine or engine management light (usually an amber engine symbol) indicates that the car's ECU has detected a fault and has stored a fault code. A check engine light requires diagnosis with an OBD scanner — it is not reset using the service light procedure. Never confuse the two: if an amber or red engine warning light is illuminated, the vehicle needs fault diagnosis, not just a service reset.

Can I reset the service light myself if I have the car serviced at a garage?

Most garages will reset the service light as part of the service, but it is not uncommon for it to be missed — particularly at fast-fit centres or mobile service providers. If you collect your car after a service and the light is still showing, ask the garage to reset it, or follow the manual reset procedure yourself once you have confirmed the service has been completed. There is no harm in resetting it yourself after a professional service.

Common Questions

FAQ

Yes — this is one of the easier DIY jobs you can do on a Citroën C4. No specialist tools are needed and most people can complete it in 5–10 minutes, even with no prior experience. Follow the step-by-step guide above and take your time.
At an independent UK garage, expect to pay £20–£40 for service light reset on a Citroën C4, including parts and labour. Main dealer prices will typically be higher. Doing it yourself can save a significant portion of that cost — the parts alone are often less than half the garage price.
For a Citroën C4, allow approximately 5–10 minutes. This assumes you have the correct tools and parts ready before you start. First-timers should add extra time for reading through the steps and double-checking their work.
Resetting the service light simply clears the reminder — it does not affect your warranty as long as you have actually completed the service. Keep receipts for all parts and fluids used, and log the date and mileage. This is sufficient evidence of servicing for warranty purposes.
