Mercedes Repair Guides

Free repair guides for Mercedes-Benz - written by a professional UK mechanic. The C-Class CDI diesel is one of the most common Mercedes models on UK roads, and the DPF and turbo system on these engines can cause problems as the car ages. A split or collapsed boost pipe between the turbocharger and intercooler is a frequent culprit for low power, black smoke and fault codes, and is a repair that can be completed at home with basic hand tools.

DPF Fault & Limp Mode - Split Boost Pipe

Limp mode with DPF and air intake fault codes. Split boost pipe preventing DPF regeneration - diagnosis and pipe replacement.

About Mercedes Maintenance

The guide covers boost pipe inspection and replacement on the C220 CDI, including how to identify a split pipe under load, the correct routing of the replacement, and how to clear the associated fault codes afterwards. Mercedes CDI engines are robust when properly maintained, but the DPF, boost pipes and EGR system require attention as mileage increases. More Mercedes guides covering common W204 and W205 C-Class maintenance are planned.

Mercedes diesels of the 2010s - the C220, E220 and Sprinter vans running the OM651 engine - are capable of huge mileages but have a few well-known weak spots. Injector seals can leak combustion gases and bake carbon around the injectors (the infamous black death), which shows as a chuffing noise and a diesel smell under the bonnet; caught early it is a seal replacement, left late it can mean removing seized injectors. The DPF and its associated boost pipes, covered in the guide above, cause most of the limp-mode complaints on these engines - a split boost pipe is cheap and quick to fix once correctly diagnosed.

Euro 6 cars add the AdBlue system to the watch list: heater and level-sensor faults in the AdBlue tank are common and the car will refuse to start once the countdown expires, so never ignore an AdBlue warning. Mercedes alternates between minor A and major B services, and electronics are sensitive to low battery voltage, so a battery test belongs in every service. On older W204-generation cars, check the front wings and arches for rust bubbling. Independent Mercedes specialists are plentiful in the UK and main-dealer service history matters less to values once cars pass six or seven years old.

Underneath, UK roads find the front suspension first: lower control arm bushes and ball joints are the most common Mercedes MOT advisories, and a knock over potholes on a W204 or W205 is usually a £40 bush rather than anything dramatic - Lemförder and Febi make the original parts and sell them through every motor factor. Like BMW, Mercedes brake wear sensors are single-use and must be replaced with the pads, so order them together. Models with Airmatic air suspension (E-Class and larger) follow the same rule as every air-sprung car: a corner that sits low overnight needs attention promptly, before a small leak works the compressor to death. Budget for these items at the right time and an older Mercedes is far cheaper to run than its badge suggests.
